Root

Han SanghoonHan Sanghoon·Seoul·EN

It’s difficult to find freedom from suffering without identifying and addressing the root cause. If a child experiences atopic dermatitis every time they come home, it’s not enough to repeatedly visit hospitals for treatment. One must also investigate what in the home environment is triggering the condition. Those who seek to uncover the true source of a problem must be prepared to get their hands dirty. Most people believe what they see is the essence of reality—but what is seen is only a representation, never the essence itself. When a mother holds her son close, the embrace is not the essence—it is the result born from the essence, which is the love that resides within her heart.

When we fail to understand the relationship between cause and effect, we don’t find solutions—we merely patch things up, creating temporary fixes that lead to absurd situations.

The same is true for parting ways. If love still has strong roots, a breakup tears at the ground and at the heart, just as uprooting a firmly planted tree would. But when love has withered completely, when the roots are dry and brittle, it all snaps off effortlessly—without pain, without longing. There is no sorrow in separation when the heart has already dried up.

To pursue the essence of a problem is to elevate oneself onto a greater stage. Those who live with an obsession for the essence are even more inclined to do so. Creating illusions to build what is visible to the eye is a cheap trick anyone can perform. But descending into the deep valleys of knowledge, drawing water from the source, and building a house from that—this demands a long and difficult journey. Deeper still. Toward deeper knowledge. Toward deeper truth. When you chase the root of a problem down to its origin, you’ll eventually find barren land where the roots can no longer spread. Only then can you begin to plan how to uproot it.

If you are dealing with a great root, you cannot simply pull on the stem. Doing so only breaks the stem, while the root remains intact and sends up new shoots. In plants, a snapped stem weakens the organism—but in the case of evils devised by mankind, cutting the stem only forces them to evolve and adapt, creating even stronger branches. One stem becomes two. Two become four. It’s like the serpents on Medusa’s head. Cutting the snakes isn't the answer. You had to look away from her eyes and sever the neck. That was how Medusa had to be dealt with.

Some people faced Medusa directly and boldly. That’s why they turned to stone.

At times, I feel fear. Now that I’ve revealed parts of myself—do I have the means to protect what I’ve revealed? I face the essence of my enemy, yet I don’t confront their identity directly, and so they may not know who I’m pointing at. That’s how it must be. I, too, cannot afford to become stone.

David’s confession comes to mind: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.”

If I am the temple, then surely God is with me.
