It was warm. And it was sad—so I loved it.
The Lighting Store on Disney+ hasn’t released its final episode yet—the eighth one. But it’s one of the most moving dramas I’ve seen in a long time.
At first glance, The Lighting Store appears to be a horror story, depicting strange and ghostly figures blending into the real world. A woman with fingernails growing from her palms, a ghost with endlessly growing limbs—these bizarre characters exist in a suffocatingly dark and eerie world.
When I first started watching, I thought it was a thriller, maybe horror. But it isn’t. It’s a story about family—about trying to save a loved one standing at the boundary between life and death. It’s not about fear, but about sorrow. About people who, despite the inevitability of death, still grasp at threads of hope.
Various characters appear throughout the show, all lingering on the threshold of death due to an unexpected event. The only character who can be said to be fully alive is a nurse, played by Park Bo-young, who has previously experienced death herself. The other characters tell stories of death—unwanted deaths, self-blamed deaths, sacrificial deaths born from love. But these stories are so common, they could easily be found in any family around us.
As I watched this drama, one message struck me deeply. In the world of death, it's always night. The same day repeats endlessly. And in that darkness, people must choose: to embrace life (by taking their lightbulb) or move toward death. Sometimes, it’s not even their own will that pushes them forward—it’s someone else’s love that keeps them going. A girlfriend trying to save her deceased boyfriend. A mother desperately trying to bring her daughter back.
That’s what life is. Before we reach the realm of death, we live in a world that is bright and beautiful. Yet we often feel like we’re in hell. And once we cross that line into death, we start longing for life again. We try to find ways to protect those who remain. What’s truly precious was always right beside us, and we had it all along—in this very moment.
What I loved most about The Lighting Store was how it portrayed the stories behind those ghostly figures who at first seemed terrifying. From the perspective of the living, they’re eerie and frightening. But in truth, they were once just like us—humans. The only difference is that now they are either gone or lying in a hospital bed.
No one can say for sure what awaits us after death—if anything at all. But watching The Lighting Store made me think of my family. Not the dark or terrifying aspects of death, but how much I missed my loved ones. Maybe that’s why, to me, this drama felt so warm, and so beautifully, achingly sad.

디즈니플러스의 '조명가게'는 아직 완결인 8화가 나오지 않았다. 그러나 내가 최근에 본 드라마 중 가장 울림이 있는 드라마였다.
조명 가게의 첫 부분은 현실 세계 속에 섞여 있는 귀신들을 묘사하는 것처럼, 기괴한 인물들이 나타난다. 손톱이 손바닥에 붙은 여자나 키가 끝없이 커지는 팔 척 귀신. 그리고 답답하리만치 어둡고 공포스러운 세계 속에 기구한 인물들이 나타난다.
처음 이 드라마를 볼 때면 공포, 스릴러라 생각할만했으나 이 드라마는 그렇지 않다. 삶과 죽음 경계에서 사랑하는 이를 살리고자 하는 가족에 대한 이야기였다. 공포가 아닌 슬프지만 받아들일 수밖에 없는 죽음 속에서 한 줄기 희망을 잡고자 하는 사람들의 이야기였다.
드라마 속에는 여러 사람들이 나오지만 모두 하나의 사건으로 뜻하지 않게 죽음의 경계에 머문다. 극 중 온전히 살아있다 말할 수 있는 인물은 과거에 죽음을 경험했던 간호원 역의 '박보영' 정도다. 원치 않는 죽음, 자신을 자책하는 죽음, 자신을 희생해서라도 사랑하는 이를 살리고자 했던 죽음 등 죽음에 도달한 여러 인물들의 서사는 주변에서 있을 법한 흔하디 흔한 가족 이야기였다.
이 드라마를 보며 내가 느낀 것은 한 가지였다. 죽음의 세계는 끝없는 밤과 반복되는 하루. 그리고 어두움 속에서 삶을 택할지(자신의 전구를 가져가는 것), 아니면 죽음으로 향할지를 정한다. 그 과정에 자신의 의지가 아닌 자신을 살리고자 하는 타인의 의지(죽은 남자친구를 살리고자 하는 여자친구, 딸을 살리고자 하는 어머니)로 인해 그곳에서 살아갈 의지를 전달받기도 한다.
삶은 그랬다. 죽음의 세계에 도착하기 전까지는 무척이나 아름답고 밝은 세상에 살지만, 지옥 같이 삶을 느끼기도 한다. 막상 죽음으로 가고 나면 이 세상을 그리고 하고, 남은 이들을 어떻게 해서든 살리고자 한다. 소중한 것은 가장 가까운 곳에 있었고, 지금 이 순간도 누리고 있었다.
나는 조명가게가 보여주는 삶과 죽음의 경계 속에서 공포스럽게만 보였던 인물들의 서사가 그려지는 모습이 참 좋았다. 살아있는 인간의 시선에서는 그 모든 게 두렵고, 무섭고, 괴기하지만, 사실 그들도 우리처럼 인간의 모습으로 살았던 이들이고, 차이점이라곤 이제 세상을 떠나거나 병상에 있을 뿐이라는 점인데.
죽음 이후가 어떤 모습일지, 아니 그런 것이 존재할지 확언할 수 있는 것은 없겠지만. 나는 조명가게를 보면서 가족이 떠올랐다. 죽음의 어둡고, 무서운 면이 아닌 가족이 그리웠다. 그래서일까 나에게 있어서 이 드라마는 참 따뜻하고 슬퍼서 좋았다.
