From the first time I touched the piano until now, this is the worship song I’ve played the most. Not because I wanted to be strong, but because I was a weak person.
I wanted to become stronger, and I’ve tried to live that way—but in truth, the journey wasn’t about becoming strong. It was about realizing just how weak I truly am. As I discover how much suffering I can endure, I’m also learning the depths of my own limitations. It’s not a path of gaining strength, but of acknowledging weakness.
To some, this might look like a process of becoming stronger. After all, when someone goes through hardship and survives, we often say they came back stronger. But just because someone returns from adversity doesn’t mean they’ve truly become strong. Along the way, the body and mind can be worn down. You might survive, but lose your sense of purpose or meaning in life. While the body might appear tougher, the mind may have grown weary and the soul more fragile.
So I believe the strength spoken of in this worship isn’t physical toughness or even mental fortitude. It’s the process of recognizing our own limits and becoming humble before God.
I've experienced more in my years than most people do at my age. To some, the journey—of learning, trying, failing, and sometimes succeeding—might look like strength. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned through it all, it’s this: there’s something greater than knowledge, wisdom, or power.
Humans may seem as though they can take a step forward and challenge anything, but finishing what we start isn’t always up to our own will. The bigger the deal, the larger the contract—the more true this becomes. The things that seemed guaranteed to succeed have failed. And the things that looked doomed from the start have often succeeded.
“Weak made strong.” This strength is not that of a warrior. It’s the strength found in realizing how small and fragile we truly are. Humans are imperfect beings, emotionally shaken by countless circumstances. No one is easily strong. Like a candle flickering in a storm, we can’t see even a day ahead. Who can predict the future or promise what tomorrow holds? If someone who doesn’t know what will happen even tomorrow claims to be strong—what meaning does that strength hold?
I’ve let go of the idea of fighting life’s battles with my own strength. Life has been a journey of discovering my limits. I must walk with those who can do easily what I cannot, and I must help them in return with the things I can do that they find hard. No one is truly strong. We are all incomplete and vulnerable.
