They say that many things become clearer in times of war. Can you really talk about human rights while buried in a mud-filled trench? Can you still indulge in lofty ideals when dismembered hands—what were once someone’s hands and arms—are scattered before your eyes? Probably not. That’s the nature of humanity. All the social movements we now speak of as if they were sacred truths—when our circumstances hit rock bottom, none of those ideals can survive. Only the well-fed have the luxury of entertaining such notions and mistaking them for universal truths.
War will come—quickly or slowly, but surely. South Korea will likely not be spared. I once believed the economy would collapse and then war would follow. But perhaps it will be the other way around. War first, then the fall.
We’ve talked endlessly about the coming wars. China and Taiwan. Ukraine. Hamas and Israel. But was the nation ever justice? Has history ever been just? Is there a single nation that hasn’t distorted its history? No matter how much I try, I can’t understand it. The history of the victor, the justice of the victor—written as if it were the only truth.
I listen from the side of the defeated. I hear the pent-up rage of the losers. Can crushed histories ever be consoled? Lands sliced like pieces of cake, people exploited simply for being weak—can those stories ever be rewritten? Is there truly any chance for the so-called "Third World"? If the logic of the sword still dominates, how can these nations possibly survive?
Now, the age of drone warfare has begun. The only advantages the Third World once had—cheap labor and meager resources tied to a primary industry—are no longer relevant. What remains are economic “partnerships” forged like slave contracts, bound for 50 or 100 years under the guise of cooperation.
전쟁 속에선 많은 것들이 선명해진다고 한다. 흙투성이 참호 속에서 인권을 말할 수 있을까. 손이 잘려나가고, 얼마전까진 손과 팔이었던 것이 널브러져 있는 전쟁에서도 배부른 소리를 할 수 있을까. 아마도 그럴 수 없을 것이다. 인간은 그렇다. 지금은 당연한듯 말하는 온갖 사회 운동들은 우리의 상황이 최악으로 추락하고 나면 그 누구도 주장할 수 없게 된다. 배가 불러야 머리에 헛소리가 차고 그것을 당연한 듯 믿는다.
전쟁은 빠르게 또는 느리게 분명 도달할 것이다. 아마도 대한민국도 피할 수 없겠지. 나는 경제가 무너지고 전쟁이 일어날 줄 알았지만 어쩌면 순서가 반대가 될지도 모르겠다. 먼저 전쟁이 일어나고 그 다음. 우리는 다가오는 전쟁에 대해 이런 저런 이야기를 나누었다. 중국과 대만. 우크라이나. 하마스와 이스라엘. 국가가 정의였는가? 역사가 정의로웠는가? 역사 왜곡을 하지 않은 국가가 있었던가. 아무리 생각해봐도 이해할 수 없었다. 당연한듯 쓰여진 승자의 역사와 승자의 정의.
나는 패자의 편에서 이야기를 듣고 있다. 패자들의 응어리진 분노. 뭉개진 역사는 위로 받을 수 있을까. 케이크를 자르듯 나눠진 땅과 약하다는 이유로 착취 당한 역사는 과연 바뀔 수 있을까. 제 3 세계의 기회가 과연 있을까. 칼의 논리가 있다면 제 3 세계의 국가들이 살아남을 방법이 있을까. 이제는 인간이 아닌 드론의 전쟁이 시작되었는데, 유일한 강점이었던 저렴한 노동력과 얼마 안되는 1차 산업의 자원들. 50년 100년씩 맺어버린 경제 협력이라는 이름의 노예 계약.
