The wealth of the wicked

Han SanghoonHan Sanghoon·Seoul·EN

The Bible contains a notable verse in Proverbs 13:22:

"A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous."

This suggests that even if it appears that the wealth of the wicked continues to accumulate, eventually, in due time, that wealth will be transferred to the righteous. A related passage reinforces this idea:

"Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay, what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver."

These passages illustrate the transient nature of wealth accumulated through unjust means, emphasizing that such riches ultimately benefit those who are righteous.

Observations in life often affirm these scriptures. The flow of substantial wealth seems to find its rightful place over time. No matter how much the wicked amass, their riches often dissipate like dust in the wind. This principle applies not only to individuals but also to corporations built on unethical foundations. A company established through dishonest means cannot stand firm; rotten roots cannot produce healthy fruits. Without sound roots, no fruit can flourish, rendering the tree useless, fit only for firewood.

Consider a case where a family's patriarchs were renowned for their virtue, contributing significantly to history. However, subsequent generations began to exploit this legacy for selfish gains. The misdeeds accumulated over time, leading to the squandering of the family's wealth. Despite attempts to conceal their wrongdoings, these actions eventually became vulnerabilities, leading to the family's downfall.

This scenario exemplifies "affliction in abundance." Transforming ancestral virtue into vice and hastily covering it up led to the family's collapse. In the process, their amassed wealth was sold off cheaply, ultimately benefiting those who are diligent and righteous.

While not an absolute rule, the principle of karma suggests that the seeds of sin sown by the wicked will eventually bear fruit, leading to their downfall and potentially harming others. In efforts to hide their sins, they may commit even more, akin to quenching thirst with seawater. One must choose whether to break free from the chains of sin to gain freedom or to continue hiding sins, thereby entangling themselves further.

Believing in divine justice means recognizing that wealth in this life is as transient as sand in one's palm, susceptible to being scattered or gathered by the will of the wind.
