It’s an unusually sunny day. They say that sunlight, along with meals and exercise, helps reset your circadian rhythm. Eating signals the body to wake up, and moving energetically tells it that the day has begun. Sunlight seems to remind us that it's time to be active. When you think about it, just sticking to those three seemingly simple things can keep you fairly healthy—maybe life is really about faithfully carrying out a few simple tasks.
I took a short walk outside in clothes that matched the summer weather. As I walked, I received a welcome phone call—updates on progress, and news that the service is running smoothly. The CEO, who had been unwell, seems to be recovering. Having to work while being ill must be an ordeal. Still, knowing that treatment is underway and that things are back on track—that alone is something to be grateful for.
During my walk, I stopped by a place that might host our book club. It’s not far from home, and the route overlapped with the way I used to commute to a company I once worked at. The people I worked with there were truly good. Spending time with good people is a blessing in itself. Life has many joys, but is there any greater fortune than crossing paths with kind souls?
Among the many lessons I’ve learned while running a business, one stands out: even in a company of just ten people, there’s more capital and unseen interests involved than you'd expect. Keeping a ten-person company running smoothly takes far more than just covering monthly salaries with operating profits. There are too many unpredictable storms in business—landlords breaking promises, employees causing serious issues, or even data breaches that expose customer information.
Back in those days, no matter how good things were, a part of my heart always felt heavy. But these days, having the freedom to spend my time doing things I’ve chosen feels like a real gift. On a sunny day like today, I can simply live without being weighed down by things beyond my control.
This small taste of leisure feels like eating ice cream that’s about to melt—sweet, fleeting, and best savored in the moment. It may not be productive or constructive, but life doesn’t always have to be. Just as a carefully built sandcastle can be swept away by an inevitable wave, even a well-lived life is just a fleeting moment. Sometimes I feel like a traveler who’s landed on this planet, recording impressions in a kind of travel journal—the bright moments, and the hard ones too.
No matter how tough things get, a sunny day can still make me feel happy. I hope that on the last day of my life, the sun will shine just like this. And as I take in its radiant light, I hope to end this journey with a peaceful heart.
