There are days when I miss the quiet seas of Japan. I just wanted to spend hours by an empty, silent shore. On the way back, I’d stop by a worn-down little restaurant for a humble meal, then head to a nearby supermarket to grab a few things before returning home. A warm breeze, heavy with moisture, brushes past me. It feels peaceful.
I think back to the times I wandered those deserted beaches or walked along empty mountain paths. There were days when I was overwhelmed by stress and simply wanted to step away from reality—to pause. Funny thing is, when I traveled alone, I sometimes felt lonely in my solitude. But when I traveled with someone, I found myself missing the time I had to be alone. I guess I’ve always been a selfish person.
Listening to Joe Hisaishi’s music while reading a Japanese novel—that, to me, is the ultimate form of rest. If heaven exists, maybe it looks a bit like that. On a day when no one calls, in a quiet, peaceful place, I slowly turn the pages of a book as the sound of the wind drifts by. Within those pages, I can feel the calm air of Japan that the author has carefully sealed inside.
I’m not someone who lives life at an extreme pace anymore. I no longer squeeze every last drop out of myself like I did in my twenties. I’ve started to learn when to push and when to ease up, when to rest. In that sense, the gentle, tension-free air by the sea gives me a deep sense of freedom. And even this writing I’m doing now brings me freedom. Isn’t that a bit magical? What might be hard for someone else to write down becomes a source of peace and rest for me.
As I come to understand myself more, I’ve gained just as much freedom. And because of that, I’m happy. That, I’ve come to realize, is my strength.
