How to Be Hated

Han SanghoonHan Sanghoon·Seoul·EN

Live righteously.

It might sound strange, but living righteously—living with integrity—often invites hatred. Think about the military. When there's injustice, what is the righteous thing to do? End the injustice. But most people go along with it. They silently accept it because the majority approves, or the higher-ups expect it. Instead of risking backlash, they choose compromise and quiet compliance.

To live righteously often means being attacked even by those you're trying to help. That's the irony. Righteousness earns the hatred of both those who perpetuate wrongdoing and those too timid to resist it.

The same goes for exposing flaws in a system. No system is perfect, yet many prefer maintaining the status quo over acknowledging problems. Imagine an employee who improves a company’s process. The boss might appreciate it, but coworkers might not—because the new system could make some of their roles obsolete.

Fighting evil, paradoxically, earns you everyone's hatred. The truth is, we all do things society forbids, just hidden from view. In Korea, where certain adult websites are blocked, many bypass restrictions to access them. How many don’t? Probably very few. People stream pirated content, read illegally translated comics, smoke where they shouldn't, litter, jaywalk, cross double yellow lines, pick fights with strangers, curse without cause.

People bully their friends without reason. They watch others suffer and do nothing. Even when they could report abuse, they stay silent because “it’s not my problem.” When mass hysteria turns on someone, they don't step in and say it’s gone too far. They engage in vigilante justice. They harass celebrities online. They gamble illegally. The list goes on and on.

Living rightly is hard. It's heavy—like carrying a cross. To live rightly, you must judge what is right and why something else is wrong. You have to think. You have to feel the weight of nuance. And it’s always the righteous—the thinkers—who bear the heavier mental load.

So most people settle into mild wrongdoing. Not pure evil, but enough cowardice, enough compromise, enough small-mindedness to be “normal.” And normal people don’t only hate the evil— They also hate the truly good. Not because those people are wrong, but because their goodness feels like a mirror, or worse—a scouring pad, trying to scrub off their own grime. It stings.

There may be no real coexisting between those who live in the middle and those who live at the extremes. If people could justify slavery simply because someone’s skin color was different, then they can also hate someone for having higher standards than themselves.

“I’m more comfortable speaking informally—why do you keep using honorifics and making me look rude?” People like this want to drag others down to their level, as if it’s their right.

So yes, I’ve learned a lot about how to be hated.

The internet only accelerates this. It gives people a low-risk way to chase their darkest desires. And that interests me deeply—this world of good and evil, black and white.

Because in the end, it’s the gray area—the messy, in-between space— where people’s real selves are revealed. That’s where truth lives.
